Fr. Michael’s Spiritual Reflection–08/26/2020
The Lord’s Day
I remember hearing this story a while ago. I thought it would make a good reflection.
Did you know that there was a man who was President of the United States just for a day?
President James Polk spent his last day as President on March 3, 1849, and at midnight he was out of office. His successor, Zachary Taylor, a devoted Christian, refused to be sworn in on March 4, 1849 because it was a Sunday. He said that keeping holy the Lord’s day was more important than being President of the United States. He postponed his inauguration until Monday, March 5. So for one day only, US Senator David Atchison of Missouri was President of the United States.
What a lesson! How important is keeping the Lord’s day for us? And during this unusual time how do we do that?
