Feast Day of St. Hedwig

Today is the feast day of St. Hedwig.  Honestly, I really didn’t know much about her but when I learned that there was a city in Texas named St. Hedwig, I had to learn a little bit more.  The city in Texas was established as a place for migrants from Poland.  St. Hedwig came from a family of national leaders in Poland.  Both she and her husband held powerful positions.  St. Hedwig eventually became the monarch of Poland and spent much of her time as such caring for the people, especially the poor.  When her husband died, he was buried at a Cistercian monastery and St. Hedwig chose to join the nuns there.  She never took vows but lived the life of a religious nun and later was buried at the monastery just like her husband.

St. Hedwig was known for establishing several hospitals for the sick and lepers and she had donated all her fortune to the church.  Her faith was much more important to her than all the power she had.  It’s just nice to read about someone who had such a great relationship with God and was not overwhelmed with power and fame.
